Costco Raises Minimum Pay to $16/hr.
Posted by tim-v-pls on February 26, 2021 at 6:05 pmPerhaps this is something to consider when hiring entry level people?

Entry level I’m generally in the $18-$20 range with no experience or post-secondary education; $25 with no experience and an associates or bachelors degree.
Wage compression is real!
What a weird headline…Costco didnt raise the minimum wage, they raised their base salary. It would be like saying Google raised the minimum wage to $125k/year or whatever.
But around here you can make $15/hour at a fast food place, so it isn’t huge news.
They probably have to make noise about it to help stave off the unions that want into Costco.
-All thoughts my own, except my typos and when I am wrong.Costco also offers an fairly solid benefits package.
Ah, another career I can actually make some money at!

If you are in surveying and not making 15 bucks and hour you need to quit right now – today.
When an entry level person is looking at potential employers, one of the starting points for their search is pay.
My view is the pool of potential employees, at the entry level, is similar for survey companies and Costco. In many cases, a person at the entry level stage of their career wouldn’t even look at surveying as an option.
Regarding the union issue: if that’s the case, it’s probably a wise business decision.
I’d submit that is a benefit of having unions, even to non-union employees. It pressures employers to take steps to keep unions at bay.
Revising the thread headline to make it less weird for you doesn’t seem like an option.
Why is that?
from an online article… Wage compression “… is especially likely to be true of your best and longest tenured employees or of high performers or managers who have not seen pay increases along with their increased responsibilities or output.”
If wages are compressed it’s from the top end. Pay at the top should be increased.
Costco long ago made it policy to hire and retain good staff, and to do so they have always paid well and provided benefits. It is not unusual to see employees at my local Costco who have been there since the 1990’s. But they countenance no BS with their employees. Single transgressions of policy can result in instant termination. That is what they get in exchange.
Oklahoma has no Costcos. They have plenty of Sam’s Clubs. The employees at Sam’s are all short timers and it shows. The merchandise and layout of the two are very similar, but the experience is very different.
Further comment would leak into P&R so I’ll stop here.
I’ll be headed right out to, wait where are you located at? ????
And if you are paying your employees that low, please go solo or try something else.
@norman-oklahoma
There are at least two Costcos in OK.
According the full article, only about 20% of their workforce is paid minimum wage. The average pay is $24 an hour and as others have pointed out they have a generous benefits package as well.
Don’t all of you apply at once, it might crash their server:
Orange County, Ca
SURVEYOR III
(Map Check & Right-of-Way Services)$80,745.60 – $108,784.00 Annually
Possession of a valid LAND SURVEYOR IN TRAINING (LSIT) or ENGINEER IN TRAINING (EIT) certificate issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists is required within one year of appointment. Incumbents in this position that hold an active California Professional Land Surveyors license (PLS) will receive an additional $1.50 per hour after license verification and management approval. Approval depends on whether the assignment utilizes the PLS.
??? ??? ??? ??? ????
It seems that they have opened a couple there in the last year or so.
This appears to be a position ment to fulfill duties that don’t require a PLS. No need to waste tax payers money on paying PLS wages for non professional work. I would also assume that if a PLS was selected they would be in a good position to move to a higher paid position when available.
Not a bad strategy for a new PLS who is interested in goverment work.
Understood. Just wondering why bother with the 1.50 up swing at all. The EIT part is also interesting to me.
I’m not in a position yet to apply amd would be when I can get my LSIT wrapped up. ASAP hopefully this year.
Surveying at the entry level needs to have pay competitive with other entry level. But, simply NOT being retail is going to be a plus for a lot of people when they think of surveying.
And, it isn’t so much your headline, as the headline all over. It just struck me as strange.
