What to do when..
Posted by jitterboogie on April 5, 2022 at 5:56 pm..you’re told to just go use a Cone and your truck in a busy 4 lane state highway with center and side turn lanes as traffic control. And grab someone else if you think you need them.
SUE locate crew refused to go into traffic last week, but were told there’s no lane closures as it wasn’t put into the budget. Somehow they got the shots.
Permits have been pulled in the past, via records lookup. Not this time, not part of the budget, no traffic control.
Does anyone here operate this way?
Am I missing something, or is this just the way everyone operates to save 1500 Dollars for a rolling 10hr lane closure?

Hard NO! Ask your supervisor if the OSHA investigation will save the company money.
If they send you packing for refusing to do the assignment, its not a place you wanted to work long term. They also open themselves to a wrongful termination lawsuit if they choose that path.
It’s the company’s job to keep people safe and they have failed tremendously. The client pays for it all in the end. I’m not estimating a job like this without accounting for proper safety measures, whatever they may be. If your company is, I’d look for another place to work.
If this is in Colorado such activity would be a violation of the required CDOT permit for working in the right of way.
And I hate bringing this up again, as I am still haunted by it, but having once lost an employee’s life due to poor highway safety practice, I strongly recommend against cutting any safety corners when working in traffic.
If your life and/or safety is not worth $1,500, that’s a strong indication that it’s time to find another job.
I remember you mentioning that, I’m sorry this happened to you and that my post is bringing up that event for you.
I’m looking.
funny thing is though after I had a soft phone interview with a recruiter, everyone that was interested in me recently in the past two weeks has disappeared.
just seems kind of odd that everyone just disappeared after talking to someone who knew the surveyor that quit the company that I’m currently working for.
anyway I digress I’m not going to go into the traffic and if they want the points shot they can go out there themselves. especially the engineers that thought it was too expensive to get us a lane closure for $1,500 for 10 hours.
and thank you all for being candid this is the number one killer of surveyors traffic kills more surveyors than anything else.
My philosophy of a good leader is one that will not tell you to do something that they themselves would not do. I know I’ve been tempted (and with my NY attitude, may have said) “You think it’s safe, then you go do it!”
Is his holiest of bovines going to give me the business for ending a sentence with a preposition? Apologies in advance.
He was the o e who said use a cone and the truck.
it’s ok. I’m not going to risk my life to do topo.
I miss my poorly paid safety conscious municipal job now.
???????
I always tell my kids (and employees) that their safety is their number one job. You cannot leave it to anyone else.
As an employer, I legally and morally take care and am responsible to have a safe work environment, but no one should let that make them complacent, and each person needs to make the go-no-go decision for themselves. Any person on the site should be able to stop work to prevent injury or recklessness.
-All thoughts my own, except my typos and when I am wrong.but someone willing to go dance around in traffic isn’t the best source for that either.
kinda like letting Charles Manson make decisions on who gets to do what for prison detail work.
thanks for your input, I understood the message.

If you get hurt, the company will pay a fine, maybe settle a lawsuit (insurance will pay)…you could be dead or maimed for the rest of your life. The rest of your life is a long time. If your spidey sense says, “NO,” listen to it.
-All thoughts my own, except my typos and when I am wrong. Never had a job worth dying for and if they can’t find money in their budget to keep you safe, that pretty well tells you everything you need to know.
I was a kid playing with a buddy when he swerved out into the road on his bike and was hit by car going 40 mph. Old lady driving didn’t have time to hit the brakes. I was right next to him on the side of the road when he got hit. He lived but both legs were crushed and he nearly bled out on pavement. Sort of thing you never forget and makes you look at traffic a little differently.
WillyI hate having to hit the like button to acknowledge that horrific event.
I’m sorry.
I used to work in organ transplant. I’m far too familiar with the trauma cars do to human bodies esp if they are car versus pedestrian.
Jesus. I’m sorry.
@jitterboogie No worries. When it comes to traffic remember they are all out to kill you, and you only have to be right once.
WillyYep. I’ve pulled the stop work card before. Shocked the guy who was running the show but then he was like, “Wow.thanks. I had no idea that was going on.”
Each site and situation is different.
because the SUE guys are afraid to get fired more than I am, I will likely be reprimanded and suffer reprocussions, and I’ll be ok sleeping.
Again, thank you all for feedback.
I Might make flippant THRAC attack and obtuse renderings here, but I don’t compromise safety, ever. Esp for people working with/for me or myself.

ending a sentence with a preposition
I think you’re fine:
Is it grammatically correct to end a sentence with a preposition? It’s not an error to end a sentence with a preposition, but it is a little less formal. In emails, text messages, and notes to friends, it’s perfectly fine. But if you’re writing a research paper or submitting a business proposal and you want to sound very formal, avoid ending sentences with prepositions.I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will! Setup well clear of the road (several positions of necessary) and do multiple reflectorless shots. May add hours to the job in heavy traffic waiting for a gap but ain’t no way you should be playing thread the needle.
oh buddy do I.
Spidey sense says dust of the resume and call people.
Anyone looking to expand into the Colorado marketplace?
Not enough Surveyors and I’m happy and excited to be close to my LSIT after the FS and will glad work field and office to get us up to speed, and train the new gals and guys to keep the train moving forward.
(self THRAC OVER)
I think that they used the scanner SX12 as a seller for safety for just that.
I was already told that the 88 hours in the project management plan was not enough, ‘lean to win the contract’ and that I’d have to get it done in 50 because I’m more expensive.
yeah. I need to leave.
