When Employment Advertisements Go Wrong
Posted by james-fleming on May 26, 2021 at 7:25 pmSo I’m searching online ads for some ideas because I need to come up with something to post looking for a PLS in an adjacent state satisfy my Napoleon-like need for geographic expansion and I came across this gem:
The successful candidate will manage/perform design related surveying projects using relevant office software, modeling and CADD technology. Projects may include boundary, topographical, construction, control networking and high definition surveys. The Licensed Surveyor is expected to perform calculations using surveying formulas and skills and/or utilizes computers in order to solve problems. Ongoing communication with the Division Manager, clients, staff and internal design team is essential.
I sure would look forward to going to work every day and “using relevant office software to perform calculations using surveying formulas and skills”.

I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will!@dougie
Didn’t you ask for 5 years of field experience and 3 years of C3D for your entry level personnel?

The successful candidate will manage/perform…
It’s pretty rare to find someone who can both manage a project, as well as perform the project, at the same time. Usually they can do one, but not the other.

It’s even more rare to find someone who can both manage and perform all of those types of projects at a high level of competence.

You should respond to the ad and say “There’s a remote possibility that I may be somewhat qualified in a variety of the skills that you may or may not be looking for”.

The fun part is I’m interviewing candidates for a HR Manager position this week as well….
Those people live in an alternate universe.
“What is your spirit animal?”
“Whaaat?”
“What is your spirit animal?”

Trolls need jobs too.
I’ll take it! Wow a raise!!!!!
…someone left off a zero in that figure…
@brad-ott To be fair, the “clown show” portion of the job is only about 1/3 of the HR Managers job description.
About 2004 or so I advertised for someone that was familiar with office procedures and was willing to learn CAD. I was really needing someone in the office that could adequately handle phone duties and help me put together bids and billing. The CAD was just something I threw in to see if I could pick up some help that might be interested in the business. This was a non-gender specific position but I expected a female would have more finesse with the phone stuff.
I read through a mountain of applications complete with typos and absolutely horrible composition. Then I read a stellar resume from a young man that lived local. He had actually worked for an engineering firm with which I was familiar. I hustled him in for an interview.
After about ten minutes into the interview I noticed something odd about his replies to my questions. I would ask him something and he would begin his reply with the phrase, “What I’m hearing you ask me is….”. The rest of his reply would (almost verbatim) refer to a portion of his resume. He would never “hear” what it was that I was asking. It was almost impossible to get a straight answer out of him!
The kid was smart. I really needed some sharp help, but his answers bugged me. I called a buddy of mine he had listed on his application at his old employer. I asked him if this kid was the real deal. He paused for a second, chuckled a bit and then said, “What I’m hearing you ask me is…”.
My applicant had apparently been noted for saying that phrase at least 100 times a day at his previous job.
I had to let him know I was looking at some other people… 😉
@paden-cash He probably learned that at some dopey self help seminar
Yeah, that’s a big red flag right there. I don’t mind personality quirks, and can tolerate a lot of weirdness from my coworkers. But I have worked with a few folks like that, and all were notable for both their lack of imagination/problem-solving skills and their dedication to avoiding responsibility…
“…people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.” -Neil PostmanTo avoid upsetting people “HR” is a radio code used by Search & Rescue.
It means ‘non-urgent medical assistance required’, which is also another way of saying a body has been found. (HR == Human Remains)
And that’s what I automatically think everytime I hear the term “HR'”
Good luck with your hiring…
