trimble r8 model 2
Posted by Flatpan on October 10, 2014 at 1:31 amTrimble r8 model 2, we purchased a set of used receivers with a trimmark 3. All satellites are shown are both the base and rover. When the survey starts all satellites are shown as soon as the information is received from the base the glo Nass satellites are gone. Thee internal radios do not seem to be working. I tried using the trimmark 3 which was updated to firmware version 1.30. Any suggestions? I think it may be a radio firmware issue. Is it possible to reinstall radio firmware?

R82’s can’t get GLONASS
R8 model 2s absolutely do receive GLONASS, why would you post when you have no idea what you’re talking about?
As to the problem… make sure GLONASS is checked in both Base Options and Rover Options in the Survey Style. Once the survey starts, the collector only shows the number of satellites that are actually being used in the solution, so if no GLONASS corrections are coming from the base it will appear that they were dropped. If you’re tracking GLONASS at both base and rover before you start the survey, this is most likely the problem.
You should also make sure that you’re running the latest firmware in the receivers that you’re eligible for; your dealer can help you with this if you’re not sure how to do so.
As for the radio, there shouldn’t be any issues with using a TMIII. Make sure that all of your protocols – in both receivers and on the radio – are set to TMIII@9600. Also make sure your serial baud matches between the TMIII and the R8 base; that the radio is set on COM1 if you’re using the Lemo connection on the R8; and that the format (CMR+ or CMRx) is set the same for the base and the rover.
I would also hard boot both receivers (about 45 seconds on the power button, until the satellite light has come on for 15 seconds then gone back off). If none of the above gets you working then you need to contact a service center.
The R8 model 2 DOES receive Glonass.
Lee is giving good advice. Start with the reset; it could just be that there is an ephemeris miss-match. If both are showing Glonass before the correction is applied, it stands to reason that there is some discrepancy between the base and the rover. If that fails, and do this anyway, check the firmware that it is as updated as possible and the same version on both receivers.
I have tried everything as suggested. The one thing is there are varying firmware between the base 4.64 and rover 3.50. Trimble did not think this would be an issue. I’m going to update the firmware on the rover to the latest version 4.64 and reinstall on the base.
Amy other thought would be appreciated. If that does not solve the problem I will repost at a later time.
I would absolutely update that 3.50. You may want to step it up gradually rather than going from 3.50 straight to 4.64.
The problem I see with that is on the trimble website the only option is 4.81. They do not seem to be supporting the model 2s. My dealer was going to get me the 4.64 to install, but I don’t know how to be able to go up gradually upgrade since they are no longer available on the trimble support on their website.
I’m sorry, you are correct, I was thinking of the original R8, not the R8 model 2….my bad
Sounds like a survey style issue to me. Radio baud rates and broadcast language have to be correct on both base and rover survey styles. Should be broadcasting CMRx at the radio and expecting it on the rovers. Is the radio narrowbanded?

I’m not 100% sure that link will take you straight there, but if you go to Support & Training > Support A to Z and click on Trimble R7 and then Downloads, they have versions 3.82 and 4.63, but they also have a link at the bottom to archived versions. One of the archival versions is 4.01; I would go 3.50 > 3.82 > 4.01 > 4.44 > 4.64. Of course, you can only go as high as your warranty date will support. The latest R-series firmware version is 4.91.
Sorry for being snippy as well… I hadn’t had my coffee yet.
That link above does take you straight to the archives page. I also have 4.05 on my computer; I can e-mail it to you if you have trouble with the web page.
The one unit does not currently have cmrx so I have been using cmr+. I have tried both the 12.5 and 25 bandwidth on the internal radios with no luck
Appears to go to the correct location. I will see if my dealer has my serial number added to make the upgrades. That should allow me to go to the cmrx option
You can check your warranty date for firmware upgrades through your data collector. All of the versions on the web site list the warranty date that you must meet to install. You really don’t need to involve your dealer unless you’re more comfortable just letting them do it for you.
In Trimble Access you check the warranty date by going to Instrument > Receiver Settings while connected to the receiver in question; it’s shown on page 4/5. As I recall it was similar in Survey Controller.
Trimmark III is 25KHz / 12.5 KHz switchable. You can tell if the R8 radio has been set to 12.5KHz by looking at what protocols are available; TT450S@8000 is 12.5KHz; TT450S@9600 is 25KHz.
No problem, it was 7:45 in the morning when i posted and hadn’t started coffee, let alone start the downloads from the crew’s day before. On another note, do you see a drop off of glonass sats in the late afternoon? we are getting that here in mid-south florida on the east coast. not sure if it’s my crew choosing shade (which they know they shouldn’t) or just the constellations…..
I needed to upgrade the warranty to install the new firmware. Hopefully that will solve the problems if not I will have to post more information to work with.
Crews haven’t mentioned anything. Our crews are often out of the field by three though.
