If I remember correctly, when I started surveying in 1988 one of the party chiefs I worked with had spent some time as a high school math teacher before changing careers.  Kind of stood out because, out of the half a dozen crew chiefs, he was the one that didn't refer to me as the "college puke"

Joe Bell switched from being an MD to land surveyor in his mid 30s(?).  I've always thought that is one heck of a big leap.

@mike-marks

Reminds me of the old joke:

Doctor needs his land surveyed, calls Joe.  Joe surveys the land and charges him $5000.  The doctor hit the ceiling.  "You were only out here two hours!  That's $2500 an hour!  I'm a doctor and I don't charge that much!"

Joe replies, "I didn't charge that much either when I was a doctor."

And Joe Bell was what every surveyor I know professed to want to be: an OB-GYN.

He probably switched jobs for cheaper E & O insurance. OB is about as likely as any to get sued.
