Multnomah County Deputy Surveyor

Here's an Oregon job posting.  It is a more urban county so there could be less salal and blackberry.  Contrary to the current PNW heatwave in the national news, the PNW has rather pleasant weather with occasional ( 😉 ) rain.  A good portion of the folks on this site seem to have Oregon or PNW connections so please send around to anyone who you might know.

Multnomah County is the county Portland is (mostly) in.  And the City of Portland is probably at least half the land area of Multnomah County. Then there are a number of suburbs. But there is still plenty of rural land out east.

I believe that the person who currently holds that job was hired to it internally. He had been a county employee for many years before he got licensed. But I'm guessing that they wouldn't be posting this position if they had a valid internal candidate.

I'll bet they ARE posting it because they have a valid internal candidate.

Typical of civil service to cover their tracks and have showy, time-wasting interviews.

@dave-lindell While I appreciate the cynicism, I think that the job posting is a sincere attempt to find a good candidate.  I don't work there and have no inside knowledge, but like @norman-oklahoma I'm familiar with the region and some of the people.  I think that the situation is more likely that frequent situation in both the public and private sector of trying to find good applicants (or sometimes even ANY applicants).

I'm sure that disingenuous job postings with showy, time-wasting interviews occur, but I think it is a small fraction of the total and most job postings should be taken at face value in the absence of additional information otherwise.  Places everywhere are trying to hire good surveyors and that starts with good applicants (or sometimes just ANY applicants).

That salary is low for a qualified individual in that area, I would think.

Mark - Actually, the current deputy worked for a few years over here in Central Oregon for HHPR and went to PDX in 2010 or 2011. By 2014 he was the Multnomah deputy. He did good work over here and since he was filing surveys in our office we were sorry to see him go. With a big company like that you never know what you're going to get as the next office PLS

Ah, yes. I know the man you speak of. I think, perhaps, that there may be more than one D.C.S. there?

There could be more than one. I know that Washington County has a whole stable of Deputies. Our man in Clackamas is retiring tomorrow so this advert is definitely for his job. He got to work on some real interesting and complicated urban jobs up there. Selwood bridge and its various old R/Ws and such.

No, I think they really are looking.  I talked to the C.S. a week ago on another issue and he let me know they were looking for someone.
