Carlson BRX7 (Hemisphere S631) IMU troubles
Posted by goodgps on September 24, 2020 at 3:34 pmIs anyone else having IMU issues with their rover ? I have been told to disable the IMU in order to survey. Thats kind of weird sisnce a big selling point was the IMU to take slant measurements. My IMU simply wouldn’t initialize, prohibiting me from taking any shots.
No one can tell me how to do a factory reset on the unit either. Very odd indeed

I would be reaching out to Carlson to ask why this is occurring. If a big selling point was the IMU capability and that is not working, they better have answers for me on how to resolve the issue via technical support or some level of technical service.
I hope you get this resolved in a timely manner and only a minor hiccup.
@goodgps Performing a factory reset on the Carlson BRx7 (if needed) can be accomplished via one of two ways:
- Through the SurvCE/SurvPC interface. Presuming the collector device and the BRx7 are already communicating with one another via BlueTooth, issue the SurvCE/SurvPC Equip tab — GPS Utilities (button #0) — Reset Factory Defaults, or,
- Via the WebUI of the BRx7 (see the connection steps starting at p. 29 of the BRx7 User Manual) through a WiFi-compatible device.
I’m not aware of any pertinent issues related to why the IMU should be turned off and have dispatched a message to the Carlson development team to see if there is anything I’m missing.
I hope this information helps.
@ladd-nelson. Thank you. I did a factory reset Via web. No improvement. In fact now the imu will not initialize at all. After10 minutes, I disabled the imu so as not to look foolish to my clients. Today, I’ll swap units to see if I have a bad unit. As far a general machine performance, these operate remarkably well. The rover does have a time out issue if I leave it alone while digging up monuments, say in hard surfaces, but it reconnects quickly. The only lamentation I had yesterday, was not using tilt to catch a monument that was under a fence. Had to do offsets.
Are you happy with the IMU performance and precision (if it works)?
Looking for a new GNSS unit and demo’ed a IMU capable tilt correction. I was impressed! They now improved the calibration process by walking just a few meters instead of shaking the receiver and doing all that silly stuff.
@gto234 When I first got the receivers, IMU worked fine. by the second job, troubles began and by the third and fourth job, I had to disable the IMU in order to do any work. Hemisphere (in Scottsdale Az) is unresponsive. My dealer is doing everything he can to find a solution. We’ve tried factory reset. swapping out base and rover, NOTHING works. Recently, the Data collector and rover will just disconnect. I am beginning to think it is a software to Unit handshake problem. It has been a few weeks now with no resolve. As far as the precision of the S631 / BRX 7, I find them to be excellent (when working). I have a course at my office which has been surveyed by different equipment for nearly 20 years.
The S631 units compare nicely AND they take adequate measurements on points we placed under tree canopy for the instruments. Now, if the things will just work as advertised, I’ll be a big promoter.
Which DC are you using?
A hemisphere CW400 running windows mobile 6.5 I will change that to a Juniper Mesa ASAP
yeah, Windows mobile is a dog, and may be part (most?) of your problems.
Also, personally I would have purchased from Carlson instead of directly from Hemisphere. The hardware is identical, but Carlson has a more granular personal support approach. Not saying Hemisphere is a bad company at all, they just have a different business model. To me they seem to only want to sell multiple units to contractors so their support is set up differently.
If they’re Hemisphere units and you’re in the US, it may depend on your version of Carlson.

You’re not gonna believe this. I discovered that my Iphone wifi and Bluetooth were on. My Phone was connecting to the rover causing a disconnect from the data collector and corrections. When I turned off the phone wifi, there were no more tilt sensor problems. Who would have known ?
What software are you running on the data collector? Field Genius?
Interesting and good to know. I am having the same problem and am presently not able to use my S631 although it worked fine for 20 previous surveys. I occasionally had to initialize the IMU by the usual methods which was annoying but I was always able to get it going until recently. But, I’m wondering what will happen if I am surveying somewhere that has wifi? For instance, I often test the equipment in my backyard but I have my home wifi enabled. Or, if I was surveying near a client’s place where they have wifi. Or, near a wifi hotspot. Is it just the phone causing this? Maybe it saves your phone as a connection and automatically connects? I have never connected to my S631 using wifi but I have connected to my base station with my Samsung phone using bluetooth.
The other thing you mentioned was disabling the tilt sensor. How do you do that?
Thanks for responding.
Hmmm. I tried it. Didn’t work. Maybe I need to go out in the country away for all wifi signals.
