GLONASS, GNSS, Ukraine
Posted by said-lot on February 22, 2022 at 5:36 pmWith one eye on the news, I checked out GPS world this morning and was surprised to learn of a few concerning articles on Russia and GLONASS, GNSS, and GPS dating back to last year. I was not aware, for instance, that Russia had threatened NATO to take out 32 GPS satellites after a successful missile test last year. Was also not aware Russia is already prepared to do without GLONASS and GNSS (at least for battle). Anyone else out there concerned about these developments? Should we expect shenanigans to be limited to operations near Ukraine, or is the whole system ripe for disruptions as leverage in a larger geopolitical conflict?

Let’s hope that Bad Vlad has the sense to realize that blasting satellites out of the sky would end very badly for everybody, especially him. But a healthy dose of signal scrambling shouldn’t surprise anybody.

GPS satellites would be the first to be terminated. Why wouldn’t they be targeted?
The death of GPS would essentially break our finance system, our communications, our transport, etc etc etc
-All thoughts my own, except my typos and when I am wrong.Serious question…how many surveyors today could function without GNSS? I know of some companies that ONLY do RTK, they don’t even have conventional equipment. I realize that would be the least of our worries, but just wondering….
I could go back.
But, geeze loooeeze!
I would miss my Javad!

We certainly could as most in the PNW could. The situation is the opposite here, with many surveyors not yet owning GPS. Tying things to the NSRS would become much more difficult, to the point of impractical for ordinary work. So the GIS would quickly wither on the vine.
My old buddies back in OK would manage after a period of chaos. They owned total stations. Rarely used total stations. Nevertheless there would be some outfits in OK which would be dead in the water.

I could function; I wouldn’t be happy, but I could function.

Not even a tape?
I hope everyone has a great day; I know I will! @dougie
I thought Spock was going to be in the scene where they come to present day Earth and he laments trying to do things with “bear skins and stone axes.”
.No GNSS sounds good to me, just means more???ø???ø???ø
Most of my work is done with a robotic total station. But the jobs that need GNSS couldn’t be done without it in any practical way.
That would certainly ground my RTK drone. It dials into the statewide RTN and collects photos or LiDAR during the mission.
Of all the constellations, russia is the weakest. No L5 equivalent. Galileo and Beidou are the best constellations and, not surprisingly, are the newest. The US has new satellites finished and able to be launched, but are in storage since existing satellites are ??still functioning ??.
…And then you forget the dealing with that intl space station thingy….oh yeah baby, they own a pretty decent chunk of that….outter space throw down??? Get some!!!!!
Yikes.
We could get the beer ready and perform astro observations again. Maybe I could ask for a raise. Not to many folks left that can do astro observations to Polaris or sun or a few other stars. Maybe just maybe I could get a pay raise. Lol. Also all the software that has server licensed and all those that have to connect to Internet would be no more. Internet timing atm cell phones all would not work. I still have two in the box 300 ft add steel tapes so no worries. Just send up the smoke signals and me and my steel chain plumb bob chaining pins will be available.

Anybody who can use a total station or theodolite can quickly learn to get azimuths within a few seconds of arc. Time isn’t particularly critical, and not at all at elongation. You just need a source of astro data and the local Laplace correction.
Edit: by Polaris I meant. Others are trickier
.@bill93 And beer ??§ is required at night if I remember correctly. I think I was told it was the most important tool. I took my first sun shot and polaris at a seminar under RE Buckner. I was extremely wet behind the ears in the 90??s. I did many sun shots in TN and some astros outwest . Then did more in the military. The last time I was involved with astro we shot 4 different stars at NGS training center under Dave L. Both of these valuable gentlemen have passed on but great to have had the honor of standing beside them and learning. I still have my old radio thatI could tune in to get the time and wish my old stop watches were still working. I have some old sheets around here somewhere for recording manually all the data for reductions. Now we can plop out gps and move on.

The news of my passing is greatly exaggerated. Dave L.
@dave-lindell the other Dave Lehman. Sorry about that.
I would not be surprised one bit if GPS is targeted. I would expect that it would be first on the target list for any large scale conflict in today’s modern world. The mother of all sanctions.
Does Javad equipment have anymore ties with Russia? From what can find Javad is made in California with R&D done in Russia at one time. But this may be different now.
