Has anyone pulled the trigger on the Emlid system yet?
Posted by husker796 on March 1, 2021 at 11:51 pmSeems like a great price point if you could get it to work with some decent controller software. Anyone have any experience / Input on these?

Yes, great price and performance. Although if you read their users forum, there seems to be a lot of quirks with their firmware. You save a bit because it uses your phone as the data collector.
Yes have one Emlid Reach RS2 for a week. The task is to set it up on Ntrip for an ongoing watermain replacement project, for topo point collection and As Builts data collection.
The hardware is nice, good internal battery, no external antenna with Ntrip. Fixes ok and looks promising.
Intended to use our phones and mobile data as hotspots to get corrections, and use the very basic Reachview App, either iOS or in our case Android.
I had some connection issues with my phone, and have put a sim card in the RS2 (sharing data from my phone account as required). Easier to connect now, wifi to reach.
New to setting up and using Ntrip. Positions and heights are not right, possibly a projection issue trying to resolve with supplier and online community.
Have tested with free network and another correction service, similar problem.
Can get data out and adjust in Civil 3d. Getting points files back and forth is horrible for me, due to file formats. The supplier sells these more for drone base/mapping applications, and have a simple filter to get data in out of QGIS.
I am also playing with trial versions of Field Genius Android and Survx 4.0 Android. These apps could solve most problems, being able to Localise/calibrate to correct data, and simplify data transfer. Also adding functionality but also cost. Finding the learning curve difficult. So far a time waster and not productive.
But to have you remember the cost of this receiver. It’s not a dealer supplied and set up system or just plug and play.
Probably the first in my area trying this, once the set up parameters are known it should not be so difficult.
Had an issue with positions from the RS2 using ntrip and local projection. The receiver went back for checking, sent reports back to supplier and Emlid, but was not resolved. Receiver was returned for refund.
what’s the difference in positions from different observations?
I did, had trouble with processing static data, and getting it to OPUS cleanly. Ended up returning for refund and bought a IGAGE.
Has anyone tried their free NTRIP Caster with more ‘standard’ survey equipment?
@gary_g
It has something to do with the position header values (X,Y,Z) in their RINEX files. Try to edit in notepad and change to 0.0 0.0 0.0 if their values are not all 0s.
Just tested South G1 imu today and had the same errors. Looking like an issue with my nearest base station. Further testing using different stations is required.
I bought two of the Emlid RS2 units last fall. Currently I use one as a network rover using FieldGenius on a Windows Mobile 6.1 collector (MicroSurvey DC6), set up as basic NMEA device. There is a latency issue as it takes 10 to 15 seconds to get a good position, once the rod is still, however, I’ve received a link fix that latency issue but have yet to install it. I bought the units from Joe Douglas at E38 Survey Solutions and he provides great support. The latency issue does not exist in FieldGenius for Android according to a buddy who also has an RS2. He was running a trial version of FG on on $40 amazon tablet and it worked fine but he did end up running the RS2 with with his Carlson collector (don’t know the collector model nor the Carlson software version but he is very happy with it and doesn’t have the latency issue I’m seeing with the DC6) . When I tried FG for Android in January 2021, the program had no COGO functions (could only collect points) but I think that might have been resolved or will be soon… I haven’t been following the updates…I’m trying to retire… 🙂
I have not yet tried the pair as a base-rover setup.
Battery life is amazing, two full days (16-18 hours) of field work is no problem. They are rugged units… the one I use has survived a fall to pavement from a Toyota Tundra roof and also survived a 6′ pole drop to pavement with only one minor blemish.
If you respond to this post or have questions, it may take a few days for me to get back to you.
@kotuku4 Yep, about where I am. I received a Polaris last week. Seems to work good, still have a lot of testing to do. I like that there is nothing in the receiver but light weight bluetooth. Took me an hour the first night to get it to position, matched my old Ashtechs 0.15mm and 0.22mm the next night. Last night it matched a nearby FL DOT GPS station 0.13mm. I have collected data for OPUS and FPRN, but have not submitted it yet. I want to run the old 10M radius and chord test, since precision is way more important to me. I don’t know if I will ever use it for work, but if I do, I agree that FieldGenius will solve most of my user issues. Good Luck and keep us up to date. OP
Yes, I have used their caster with Spectra Precision Epoch receiver and it works very good.
Their Caster is very good and they support up to 5 bases.
The M2 i got doesn’t play well with my other gnss equipment. I set up the M2 as ntrip base and it works for some time and then stops, then it starts again. I don’t know why it is not stable but the problem is not on the caster side because the Epoch receiver works without problems with their caster.
