Android has the compass also.

I agree, I like android better, but I have Apple cause grandson's parents have Apple and it makes it easier to facetime with them.

I don't think compass emulators in cell phones are very accurate. From memory, they are + - 2 to 5 degrees. At least that was true several yrs ago. Have they improved? Probably. Some. But hey, I'm used to my Suunto.

I just received a new Suunto KB14...my 4th Suunto in 50 years of surveying. I previously used the yellow KB-14 model but for my final one (unless I lose it in the next few months!) I treated myself to an aluminum model.    They've gone up in price a bit since the 1970's 🙂   so has shipping!! Yikes!

The compass and two instrument case latches... total of 11 ounces was just under $25 shipping from Georgia to Wisconsin!      Ouch!

Box tapes. I like the KOMELON one, with AUTO LOCK. You pull it out, and it locks. Automatically. Push the button, and it retracts.

Those are nice and I like them, also. But I hardly use a box tape anymore. I use a Lufkin folding rule (6') for measure ups, monument sizes, offsets, and the like. And a rag tape for longer distances over 6'- which is rare. There is a box tape in the truck, but that is were it stays, mostly.

My base is often 6.10' 6.32' etc.

Rarely less than 6'.

I've got a corn tripod on base. I really like it. It allows me more variety of places for my base.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of them. Corn tripods are manufactured in Mitchell SD at the Corn Palace. Which should be on everyone's bucket list. Clearly Nate made the drive up north.

Corn tripod. It can extend to around very tall, to "see over corn". It's a Dutch Hill brand.

I'd have to measure it, but I'd guess it can extend to around 7.5 or 8 ft.

"Corn tripod". This was a common expression, back pre GPS. It's probably fallen into disuse, due to GPS.

If any of you like, I can put a couple of pics up.

If you have a base station near an obstruction, or somebody parks their truck near your base site, it gives you up to 2 feet extra height, or about that much.

It can reduce or eliminate multipath, at the base.

It can help, when the city puts a chain link fence up, near your base point, (which can ruin a good base site). Of course, a piece of range pole can help too. But, they can get wobbly in wind.

Thanks for asking.

Now I'm thinking.... Add range pole to this thing, and maybe get an HI of 10 ft! Yeah!

I wouldn't trust it, to get me to the north Pole; but I can't see the results being that different on a section corner search. most emulator's are free; or at least have a free trial. @nate-the-surveyor ,you could test it for us and let us know if it works or not...

Visited the Corn Palace in the early 80's. It was unusual then, and appears to be even moreso today: https://cornpalace.com/

Speaking of "unusual" (crazy), had the fortune of visiting a  "Buc-ees" for the first time, a few weeks ago.

Buc-ees is like a literal beehive, while also being a Walmart, on steroids, and you're covered in honey.

IF you follow Mr. Moe's directions, for getting a "Corn Tripod", well, you might as well get a good deal on pouring your concrete next time too:

(April is just around the bend, tha knows!)

I'd guess this is the tripod I have:

https://dutchhill.com/products/elt3000

And, it seem they don't sell direct.

Here are some specs:

  • Collapsed height: 53"
  • Extended height: 93"
  •

Here is a link to a reseller:

https://surveysupplyinc.com/dutch-hill-the-original-heavy-duty-extended-length-fiberglass-tripod-aluminum-head-elt3000a/

I have NO idea about this re seller, except that it gave specs. * Not an endorsement of this or any other vendor.

Nate, I figured you were using that I-phone and tried to type Crain and it changed it to corn.

That may be true, at some times, but not this time.

Do you know who the patron saint of surveyors is?

"our lady of assumption"

Maybe I'm showing my age. Old Vernacular. Have you heard? Some surveyors don't carry plumb bobs anymore!
