Temp(?) Ortho in Carlson
Posted by richard-germiller on April 11, 2022 at 7:57 pmI have been using Carlson for a little over a month, and no one in-house can answer this question, so I’m looking to the brain trust here.
In Autodesk, while in a command, if you decide that ortho mode is needed you can just hold down the shift key and it will give you essentially a temporary ortho, until you release the shift key. I have not been able to find this in Carlson. does anyone here know how to do this, or does it just not exist in Carlson?
By the way, I DO NOT MISS USING BENTLEY AT ALL.
TIA

The F8 key should toggle your ortho mode on or off
If you are using AutoCad as your CAD engine in Carlson the F8 key on the top of your keyboard will toggle ortho on and off.
I always despised using Bently, it’s commands are not at all intuitive.
Thanks, I am aware of the F8 to turn it on and off, but I found the other method very useful, most of the time I don’t use ortho and, to me, it’s faster then constantly having to look for (my hand still can’t automatically go to it) and hit the F8, and was hoping there’s a way in Carlson
Just tried it and the shift for temp ortho works for me on Carlson 2021 w/ ACAD engine.
OK, maybe it’s a setting that I’m not finding, we have Carlson Survey 2021 OEM
@richard-germiller Maybe… I am not sure. My understanding is that we have Carlson over top of the ACAD engine but I may be wrong.
No, you’re right. Carlson runs on three different CAD engines: AutoCad, Intellicad, and their OEM product. Some functions, such as those of the OP, may not work within all three engines.
It’s always helpful to list the CAD engine one is using when asking about Carlson. Hopefully Ladd will stop by to offer an answer, or as everyone always says, contact Carlson.
My 2021 Carlson runs on IntelliCad. I am not in front of my pc right now, but I am pretty sure I am able to do that Shift-Temporary Ortho thing.
Maybe one of those toggles at the bottom of the screen needs to be switched on/off?

CARLSON 2022 W/ INTELICAD, mine does the shift = temp ortho (verified)
with the F8 key enabled, shift = temp non-ortho (verified)
i’ll keep using F8
Carlson 2020 OEM Not for me
Couldn’t find any setting changes or system variables that worked, so I’m thinking it’s the background version of CAD. Oh well I guess I’ll just have to cope.
Thanks all for your time and interest.
There are some neat options that pop up when you right click in the middle of certain commands, I think. Maybe looking at these will help shake something loose?
I use shift + right click while in a command and get a popup of snaps, I find that quite handy rather than picking from a toolbar or typing, and there’s a snap for mid between two points, great for centering things, particularly in a box.
@richard-germiller yeah, that??s it. I am sorry you are struggling with the shift-temp-ortho thing. I can almost believe I have had this problem, too, maybe. I will look at my notes when I get in front of my pc today.
edit ~ I checked. I am no help. Sorry.
I wouldn’t say that I’m struggling with it, just one of those things that I got used to in Civil, but may not be available in Carlson (at least the version we’re using) I’ll just have to get used to using the F8 key again.
@richard-germiller I hate that, because I think it is not true. I am using the shift-temp-ortho just fine in my Carlson.
At the command line I type L for LINE.
Click the start of the line.
The cursor freely swings anywhere I want.
Then I hold down the SHIFT key and drag the cursor to any one of the 4 quadrants NSE or W.
EDIT:

Other things to try before you just stick with your workaround:
Change TEMPOVERRIDES command setting
OPTION command then click USER PREFERENCE and unselect SHIFT +LEFT CLICK IMAGE selection
https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-forum/shift-key-not-working/m-p/7486795#M903967
The command is – tempoverides – then type 1 and press enter
Thanks, but I really think its a version thing, as discussed, my options pop-up does not have the toggle discussed and tempoverides is an unknown command.
