Bogus Survey Caps

I recently found a "Survey Cap", Labeled "DBS INC 1405" I looked up Arkansas Surveyor number 1405, and I find Lonnie Barham in Mississippi. I call him, and he denies that it is his cap. He also suggests that it is a CORPORATION number. Now, that's funny. Finding a corporation number, that is that low, would indicate that it is an old corporation.

Maybe an engineer? I'm not finding anything. Have any of you seen this "DBS INC 1405" cap before?

I wonder. Has somebody bought a "Survey cap" and added a number? Makes me wonder.

Funky survey caps. Have any of you found this before too?

Thanks,

Nate

Found a capped bar once with the company name and a number while searching for a quarter corner.  It didn't seem to agree with other information I had, but that's all that set off the Schonstadt.  Called the company because I knew they had been doing a massive route survey in the area.  They told me it was a photo control point.  So, I asked why on Earth would they put such a thing so close to where a quarter corner should be.  They mumbled around a bit.

Haven't come across a bogus cap to my knowledge, but I have come across caps with two or three, sometimes four, license numbers crammed into that small space. I guess the firm(s) think that this saves money, but I don't see how it serves the public.

(Surprise surprise, call around to find out the provenance of that cap, and all of those licensees say "musta been one of the other guys".)

I'm going out today to look at a brand new cap that showed up on my clients property that she has never seen before.  She sent me a photo of it.  A nice new aluminum cap with no dirt on it from a surveyor that had his license revoked about 15 years ago.  Hmmm!  This could get interesting.  Research has disclosed that the position has been found before, but bent.  Now it's straight with a 'new' cap and a little ways away from where she remembers the bent bar and cap being.

@holy-cow

It always chaps me when someone uses a property tag on their control points.  If it is control and it is tagged, it should say control on it.

When I want to set a bogus monument I just use someone else's cap.  That is why I have a couple of Shelby's old caps rolling around my truck.

@rover83

If you install caps so you can't read the numbers, then you're doing it wrong, regardless of the number of numbers on the cap

I just called him again. I have not yet seen a COA number on a cap.

That's a first for me.

Thank you.

I called Donald Bland. He was very good to work with. He sent me a copy of his survey. It fits my field ties by less than a hundredth, (Tie between monuments). This worked out well. Thank you @Corey F.

@john-putnam I always try to preserve "original monuments". Never can tell when you might need a couple.
