INFORMATION ABOUT PACIFIC CREST RFA96W RADIO.
Posted by Eduardo_01 on March 3, 2020 at 7:47 pmGood afternoon, I have some doubts about a Pacific Crest RFA96W radio, since I bought this article on Ebay, but I could not find any information about it.
I would like to know if someone can tell me how to use it, or if they have any manual to read about the same radio, I would also like to know if there is no conflict in connecting it to a Trimble 5800 GPS to be able to use the RTK mode ?.
I would appreciate your response, regards.

Agradeceria su respuesta, saludos.

Good evening, attached radio photography, is a Pacific Crest RFA96W.
It has been a long time (probably about 20 years already) since we have worked with that model, but it appears what you have is only an amplifier.
Does it have two coaxial connectors on its other end? One would be input from a radio modem, and the other would be output to a broadcasting antenna.

I agree, that is only half of it. We had one years ago and I thought the above picture looked different, the two half are usually hooked together. In other words, you are missing half of it.
I do believe Dave and Glen are correct, the thing has been chopped in half.
The RFM96W was the combined unit with a radio on the bottom and the 35W amp on top. The RFA96W @eduardo_01 posted is a 35W amplifier ONLY. You will need a radio to pair with it to be usable.

Good evening, I left this post behind because I had conflicts in getting the ignition cable, compiling a bit, you tell me that for this to work, I need both the base and / or rover to have another radio of this type?
Good evening, I was a little absent regarding the question I asked you a while back, recapping a bit, what you guys tell me is that this is just an amplifier and that I need another one of the same type for the RTK to work.
I appreciate your responses in advance, regards.
To explain a bit further, the 35 watt radio was one of the PACcrest 2 watt radios merged with an amplifier to create the 35 watt version. The bottom portion was the standard radio with jumper connections to turn it into the actual working amplified radio. I don’t know if you can jump one of the 2 watt radios to that amplifier, seems simple enough.
However, if you can get your hands on a 2 watt radio you may find that it is powerful enough for what you need. I used the 2 watt version for a repeater and they worked awesome, once narrow-banding happened we had to go to more modern radios, couldn’t get them converted. Wish I still had the little units to carry around.
Not sure what else to say, you have the non-working portion of a 35 watt radio. The actual radio isn’t attached to the unit, kind of like you have speakers for a car radio but no receiver.
I appreciate your answer, I hope someone else can give me information about this type of radio.
Ok, so summing up what you tell me, is that I need a 35W radio to connect the RFA96W so that I can only use it as an Amplifier.
Is it correct, or did I interpret it differently?
Thank you for your answer.
You need a 2 watt radio, the part you have turns the 2 watt radio into a 35 watt radio.
The picture I put up shows the 2 watt unit under the amp.
Could you add me a picture with what you mention to me, I am not fully understanding what you are saying, I would really appreciate it if you could do it.
In the same way, thanks to what you answer me and in the search that I am doing in pages on the Internet and in the manuals I am understanding this better.
2 watt radio and a 35 watt unit,
They simply put an amp on top of the 2 watt unit, the best thing you could do is buy an actual 35 watt radio off the internet, I’d imagine they would be the same price as the 2 watt units or very close to it.
I don’t know if they still work I would be suspect that you can use them, out of the states maybe.
Good afternoon, I wanted to connect the RFA96 unit as a “RADIO”, but as you mention that this is only an “AMPPLIFIER”, my question would be:
Can I connect this RFA96W amplifier to an RFM96W model radio?
I appreciate your answers, greetings.
We have gone beyond my knowledge base.
I would suspect that it would be possible to jump between a 2 watt radio and your amp and create a 35 watt radio.
If that’s ever been tried, I haven’t heard about it.
However, you would need to purchase the 2 watt radio, cables to connect the two units, hope your existing amp still is viable and then you would have two units sitting apart as a radio, an awkward set-up.
Looking on the internet you can find a 35 watt radio complete for roughly the same cost as a 2 watt radio. Simply purchase a 35 watt radio, it would be cheaper than the 2 watt radio and the cables to make it work.
Examples of these radios can be the Pacific Crest Radios in their PDL, ADL and EDL versions, or am I wrong?
In the same way I attach a photograph of a 35W radio, I have another radio that is a Trimble HPB450 Radio.
