Leica tcr1105 not shooting?
Posted by foggyidea on November 18, 2014 at 3:32 pmTwice in the past week I have had instances of my gun not shooting a distance. No clicking, nothing. I switch back and forth between reflectorless and reflector, typically, on a job and in both modes the gun has not shot.
The first time I thought it might be something on the lens so I carefully cleaned the lens and it shot fine. The second time that didn’t work, but re-booting the instrument did work. I was able to complete the day without further incident.
Have any others had this problem? Oh, by the way, the distances appear to be correct, the traverse closed well anyway. I’ll take it to the shooting range (calibrated baseline) later today.
I run TDS onboard with this gun.

Donald,
It sounds like the EDM board may be on the verge of failing. On the TPS1100 there should have been one EDM board for the infrared and one board for the red laser. So it sounds like they both stop working for a moment which is odd too. I would think one mode, say infrared would give you trouble but not the board for the red laser. I am not sure if you are seeing both modes stop at the same time. In my experience usually once the EDM board starts to show issues it is not long before it fails completely.
I would prepare for getting it to Service.
thanks for the heads up
Check your co-axial alignment first. If it is out, well, there ya go! If not, well, it could be sompin else….

Any chance the gun wasn’t completely acclimated to
the colder temps this week ?Was it right out of the truck or setup for awhile ?
I’ve had that happen on a TCRA1105 in the cold and a
reboot fixes it.The first time it happened was about half way through a small topo where I had been switching between reflectorless and reflector. It happened once, just wouldn’t shoot until after I cleaned the lens. I thought that maybe the humidity and temperature change had fogged the lens.
The second time was 3/4’s of the way through a long traverse on a dry nice day, about 50 degrees.
It was the second time that I realized I didn’t hear that clicking noise that starts when you hit the distance button.
I’m going to drop it off for service, and hope that they have parts if necessary!!

Leica tcr1105 not shooting?>UPDATE
So, it turns out that the board is going on my instrument. I can’t afford a new gun at this time, still paying off the GPS from last year. So I am wondering if it’s worth picking up a used 1105. I see them on ebay in the 3K+ range, although I seem to recall that the trade in value a few years ago was about 1K.
Does anyone have one they want to get rid of?

IF its the board thats going… then a crashed inst would have the parts you’d need, and would probably be fine.
Somebody has one of those…

Leica tcr1105 not shooting?>UPDATE
Several years ago I had the EDM boards replaced on my 1103, it had past the end of life but I had kept it up with the modifications. So the new boards functioned with the upgrades I had done as they came along. These upgrades had been the fast track and the hot laser. I live in constant fear that when I take it out of the box and turn it on that it will fail. Electronics are fantastic but those old mechanical units are still operable and reliable. But, when you get used to the electronic Robotic units it is next to impossible to go back to manual data entry and an instrument man.
You might find a used 1103 or 1105 and get it and keep your old unit for possible parts. I would imagine there are so may different mods for the boards it would be impossible to tell which ones would fit.
Good luck is all I can offer.

All EDM boards looks the same but the difference is on the white label where you can find out “calibration #”. By that # you can figure out what Voltage is used for EDM board service software need for that It can be #: 12, 14. 16, 18 . It means the EDM board from one 1103 could not work with another 1103. If EDM doesn’t work on ant TPS series 99% is two motors are not working. Leica replaced whole board for a lot of $$$
but not any more. I did repair a lot of EDM boards just replacing the motors never got single come back. I am running a TCA1100 (1998 model) on a daily basis, still. I worry about future trouble, with no one around to work on these. I do have a new robot purchase in the budget for next year, but if/when my old dark green Wild Robot ever gives up the ghost, it would be nice to have someone see iof they can get her back up and running.
Thanks, Brad
ott a t mainstreetconsulting daught c o mHi Brad, am having at least 2 TPS1000 per week for service and repairs. In my opinion these guns are the best to trust on. If not mechanical damage happen you should worry only about internal memory backup battery. One day on the display you’ll see one or two horizontal lines for 1-2 sec then empty screen. After replacing the battery the software has to be load from the scratch …no problem with that. What you should do now if the gun works any extra programs you have loaded look for codes for each program and writ it down. All these codes will be needed for activating each program after repair. Leica doesn’t have them any more or doesn’t want to give help. Can contact me any time at: kwieclaw at yahoo dot com

TPS1100 not so old guns Leica should help if not then PC with DOS can sniff for them. Each code will work on the gun according to serial # can’t use them for another instrument

Best ChrisHi Chris, I’m From Brasil and my Leica TCR 307 EDM doesn’t work (msg: signal is too strong), do you replace the motor by cell phone vibration motors? What kind of motors do you use? Do you know where I can find the TCR 307 service manual?
Thanks in Advanced,
Ricardo Garay.Hi Ricardo, late replay but can give more idea. Service manual only at Leica but I don’t think you’ll be able to find this kind of help. Second ..nothing about EDM motors in service manual there is no serial or part # for motors at all. Where did you get idea about cell phone motors as replacement 😀 there are two types smaller for instruments up to 2008 and bigger till now.
Best

It sounds to me like it’s time for a new gun…..have you considered financing one? I picked up a brand new Geomax Zoom 90 with a Carlson Surveyor 2, legs, pole, prism, everything. I think I am paying like $275/mo. It’s really not that bad and productivity is way up as a result. I did put out a decent chunk as a down payment though.

Hi Dan
I don’t deal with instruments I do repair them
