Actually, I can see that those depth marks would be quite handy.
Be careful how much prying you do with them. The steel is quite hard, which allows it to hold an edge but leaves it a bit brittle.
My Favorite shovel was the one in someone else’s hand.
Remember how sharp they are-a knife and trowel in one.
I still have a scar on a finger from a slip with an almost identical tool this spring. Took a long time to stop the bleeding and I am fortunate I didn’t cut through a muscle or tendon.

Yah, a stinger or pinpointer.
@mike-marks the pinpointer is a small detector for ‘pin pointing’ objects. I’m talking about a small hand shovel with one sharp edge and the other serrated. Perfect for cutting nice plugs, roots, etc when recovering monuments.
Knife? No thanks. That knife looks like it??ll leave the grass a mangled mess instead of popping out a clean 8 inch plug using a ditch spade shovel
