Surveying in southern Illinois
Posted by BethMiddleton on April 6, 2022 at 12:42 pmI’m based in Louisiana, and have an ecological study where I’d like to determine the elevation of a study site in southern Illinois (near Perks). It seems that most of the Illinois base stations are in central and northern Illinois. Is there a system that works in southern Illinois that I can use to connect with using an Trimble R10 for a one day survey? It is on the edge of the swamp, so it is not an open sky situation.

Welcome, Beth. We have several posters who may be familiar with your location north of Paducah, Kentucky. Possibly @eddycreek or @stlsurveyor may be of help.
The MOCH and MOJK stations in Missouri seem to be connected with the Missouri Department of Transportation (in Cape Girardeau?). Does anyone know how to contact them about access?
Welcome to the forum.
The Trimble VRS Now network covers all of Illinois if you have a license and good phone reception. You’re just about close enough to Missouri to borrow their statewide RTN, that’s free, but you have to set up an account through MODOT. CORS stations are scarce in Illinois.
How accurate do you need it?
There is a line of bench marks about 4.5 miles west of Perks. Perhaps you could find one of those and use two GNSS receivers post-processed against each other to get your elevation. For the best accuracy you would want to also correct for geoid slope.
For example (There are others also):

@bill93 My email address is: [email protected] Apologies if everyone get this. I don’t know how the system works.

A more appropriate video of the exact location. I have been there and paddled around, super cool! Also the State Tree is right there.

.Yes, this is the place. Hard to survey, lots of snakes, but a beautiful place.
