Total Station for ~$1K
I'm on the lookout for a total station in the $1K price range. I am not a surveyor, just an amateur with an interest in surveying techniques. I've been learning the essentials with a Wild T16, tape measure and stadia measurements, and recently digressed aggressively into GPS based techniques as well. I realized that I sort of skipped a step, and now I'm back-tracking my explorations to include total stations.
I am a bit nebulous on my needs, my ultimate goal is best bang for buck. Ultimately, I'm just messing about on my own half-acre lot.
I've been looking at options on eBay, and it looks like in my price range, these are the most common options:
SET-3A, SET-6E SET-XL
DTM-750, GF-20C, DTM-B20C
GTS-2, GTS-3, GTS-303
I'm aware that I could get a new piece of South equipment probably close to my price range, but I'm not interested in going that route.
What would y'all reccommend?
Any electronic total station you find in that price range is probably not going to be serviceable because of discontinued parts.
Your boat has arrived!!!!!
Whatever you get, make sure it has a battery charger and even an extra battery or two.
I'm a Nikon fan. I now use a DTM-520, sixteen years old and going strong. A fully charged battery lasts all day and then some, but I doubt that's a feature you need at this time.
I have a Zeiss Elta S20 robot that I will sell you for 2K. It has 3 batteries and hp48 /smi data collector. The batteries will likely need recelled. I have not used it in nearly 7 years.
