I have seen a very similar-looking photo of the cap at the point where the 40th degree of latitude hits the continental divide in northern Colorado.  No way am I going up there to make sure no one has added a dimple or two.

@dougie

I was at some continuing education program when I saw that pic.  Gave me the heebyjeebies just thinking about being that far above sea level.

Probably a lot less hoopla when that monument was set than when it was found. I wonder how USGS got up there.

No problem if the footing looks ultra safe - not too close to an edge.  But the problem might be breathing at 13K+ feet if you aren't used to it.

Breathing is in the top ten things to keep doing at all times.  I would imagine I would start seeing Munchkins and horses of a different color plus a flying house or two by the time I got anywhere close to those lofty elevations.  My lungs are calibrated for 1000 msl.

Here is a great story from the 2006 effort to remark the intersection of the Continental Divide and the 40th Parallel.  Definitely not for mere mortals to attempt.  Razor-edged ridge line seems to be the operative word.  You will find the names of Jerry Penry and Warren Ward somewhere in this story.

Kansas Territory to the east and Utah Territory to the west.

Wonder how precise (accurate) the published elevation is?

I still can't figure out why people insist on climbing vertical rock walls and pitching a tent mid air. Is it a latent suicidal gene that was stirred from the bottom of the pool, or what? I wouldn't even get in a tent more than one inch off the ground. And they had the nerve to call me teched in the head. I hope these "individuals" have a porta potty with them......
